Process Engineering Services

Process design documentation, PFDs, P&IDs, heat and material balances, process calculations, equipment sizing and process datasheets.

Process engineering defines what a plant has to do, and every other discipline builds on it. CoreFlow prepares the process design documentation, calculations and datasheets that turn approved process inputs into a coordinated basis for piping, mechanical, instrumentation and electrical engineering.

We support new units, capacity expansions, debottlenecking and modifications to existing plants, working from the client's or licensor's process data and the project design basis. Typical work includes PFDs and P&IDs, heat and material balances, line and equipment sizing, utility balances and the process inputs needed for HAZOP and relief studies.

Process Engineering Scope

Codes and Standards

Deliverables follow the project specification and the codes it names. Codes commonly applied include:

  • ISA-5.1 and ISO 10628 for P&ID and PFD symbols and identification
  • API 520 and API 521 for pressure-relief and venting design inputs
  • Licensor and client process design basis and specifications
  • Project drafting, numbering and documentation standards

Process Engineering FAQs

What is the difference between a PFD and a P&ID?

A Process Flow Diagram (PFD) shows the main process flow, major equipment and stream conditions taken from the heat and material balance. A Piping and Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID) adds every line, valve, instrument, control loop and safety device, and becomes the master document for piping, instrumentation and HAZOP reviews.

Can you update P&IDs for an existing plant?

Yes. We update P&IDs from approved process inputs, marked-up drawings and verified site information, including incorporation of HAZOP actions and as-built changes, so the drawings match the plant as it operates.

Do you prepare heat and material balances?

Yes. Heat and material balances, mass and energy balances and stream tables are prepared from approved process data for the agreed scope, and feed directly into line sizing, equipment sizing and utility balances.

Do you conduct HAZOP studies?

We prepare the process inputs and documentation that HAZOP studies need, and incorporate the resulting actions into P&IDs, interlock schedules and alarm and trip documentation.

What inputs do you need to start process engineering?

Usually the process description, design basis, licensor or client process data, existing drawings for brownfield work, and the client specifications that apply to the project.
